Microchip Your Animals
Make sure all animals are microchipped and the registration includes your current cell phone number and email address. If you are unsure whether the chip is registered, a veterinary office can scan it and help identify the microchip company.
ID Tags
For small animals like dogs and cats, use a collar with an engraved ID tag that includes your contact information. For large animals during disasters, consider a Mane Stay, which clips to the tail or mane and holds their information, or braid an ID tag into their mane.
Search for Your Animal
Start searching immediately. If you cannot get into the area where your animal was lost, check online via Sonoma County Animal Services, Nextdoor, Craigslist. Check on social media via Humane Society of Sonoma County, Josie’s Lost Dog Alert, and Lost & Found Pets in Sonoma County.
Post to Social Media
If you have a Facebook page, or know someone who does, post a photo of your animal. Make the post public so everyone can see it, and message the post link to Josie’s Lost Dog Alert, and Lost & Found Pets in Sonoma County so they can repost it.
Create a Flyer
Create a flyer with your animal’s photo and information. Print and post it in the area, and distribute copies to veterinary offices and local businesses.
Avoid Scams
Be aware of lost pet scams, especially during disasters. Legitimate animal shelters will not ask you to pay upfront to see or get your animal back. If someone contacts you claiming to represent a shelter and asks for money, hang up and contact the shelter directly.
